This paper presents a typology of the operational and distribution models adopted by the 190 stations registered in the database of the Brazilian Association of University Televisions (ABTU), as well as a classification of the types of content broadcast by the 29 stations that operate on free-to-air (broadcast) signals. It also presents a case study of three stations operating in Maranhão. Based on these data, it offers a critical analysis of the challenges and prospects facing university TV stations in the transition to the next generation of the Brazilian Digital TV System (SBTVD).
