Is Remote VAR the Future? Challenges and Advances in Top Competitions
This session will showcase the implementation of a remote VAR (Video Assistant Referee) system for CONCACAF, developed through a partnership between TVU Networks and Mediapro, as a concrete example of how cloud-based technologies are transforming live production.
The presentation will focus on the technical backbone of the operation: the transmission of up to 18 simultaneous and frame-synchronized video feeds via TVU RPS Link; the use of hybrid connectivity—including 5G, Starlink, and ISP networks—to ensure low latency and high reliability; and the integration with professional refereeing systems such as EVS Xeebra to enable fast and accurate decision-making from a centralized remote location.
Beyond infrastructure, the discussion will highlight the operational benefits of a fully cloud-based VAR setup: reduced logistics costs, enhanced scalability across multiple matches, and improved communication between the pitch and the referee center.
By exploring both the technical architecture and operational takeaways of this project, the session aims to spark a broader conversation on the future of remote and distributed production for live events. It will demonstrate how mature, well-implemented technologies can not only meet today’s broadcasting demands, but also unlock new opportunities.
